Sony PSP landing in USA this month
Sony is making news this year. On one hand, they are competing with Apple to stay in the digital music player market. On the other hand, they are exploring new ways to stay at the top of the market in the gaming consoles. Apple came and they conquered the digital world of online music with their iTunes Music Store along with their oh-so-cool iPod music player. Sony is working hard to get back a share in that market with their recent launch of the first ever Walkman branded Mobile Phone which comes with a capacity of 512meg to store songs and has the ability to act as a music player when not being used as a mobile.
Another field that Sony is aggressively targeting is the newly opened up handheld gaming consoles. They dominate the normal gaming consoles with their PlayStation Series. However, it was Nintendo, which had products for gamers on the move. Now, Sony has released their first handheld in the form of the PlayStation Portable. It has already been launched in various parts of the world and has been an incredible success. The big test however is the American market where Sony would be launching this gizmo later this month.
Sony PSP is not just a gaming machine. Sony is targeting a larger market. Something, which solves the problems for the today’s generation with multiple functionalities. It is not competing with existing handheld gaming devices. It let users play games, watch movies, and even watch photos on the small black colored device.
Sony’s representative told the media that with Sony PSP they are working hard on creating a new market. Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc.’s chief executive Kaz Hirai said in a release: “We look at the PSP as being a mobile entertainment device. We’re trying to create a new market. I don’t see any of those products being a direct competitor.”
On the other hand, critics of the gaming industry say that Sony is calling their device more of an entertainment device to just justify the high price of the gadget, which is USD 100 more expensive than the otherwise direct competition Nintendo DS. Sony is using proprietary format as the storage device of this gaming machine, which means that users would be forced to use selected sources of content for their newly acquired devices when it is launched in the America.
