Sony PlayStation Portable gets Disney’s nod: Disney to release movies for PSP

This is good news for Sony and Sony PSP owners. Disney’s home video arm has announced its support for the recently launched PSP Platform for their movie releases. They would soon be releasing their movies on the Sony’s Proprietary UMD format used in the PlayStation Portable handheld gaming console. PSP in addition to the capabilities of letting users play games enables them to watch movies and listen to songs on this device

In fact, Sony itself is planning to give away a free copy of their massively successful movie Spiderman 2 on the UMD memory stick to (selected?) buyers of PSP in the United States where they are going launch the device later this month. Buena Vista Home Entertainment would be releasing five of their movies on the PSP compatible standard this spring. The movies are popular titles like National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Kill Bill Vol. 1. More titles are planned for the future.

Sony developed UMD especially for the PSP gaming console in order to store a large amount of data on a tiny media stick. It stores enough content to fill three regular capacities CDs. Disney is the second big movie studio planning to release titles for PSP along with Sony’s own movie studio. If the PSP becomes a massive hit (which is as good as certain), we might see more movie studios announcing their support. Then there are other smaller studios, which have also chipped in like Lions Gate Entertainment.

Sony plans to charge around USD 20 for their movie titles for the PSP while the other studios are yet to announce their prices.
