Nintendo DS sales top five million
The five-million mark was actually passed mid-March, the company said, just after the console’s UK launch, during which it became the fastest-selling console in UK video gaming history. After an initial two-day rush yielded 87,000 sales, Nintendo went on to ship 200,000 DS handhelds in the UK, putting the company well within its five to six million unit target for the full year to March 31st according to the latest figures from Nintendo of America.
The clarification of the global sales figures came after Nintendo UK caused some confusion yesterday with a press release which celebrated 200,000 sales of the console in the UK, but incorrectly stated the global sales figure as “over 3 million units”.
“Around the same time that I became president of Nintendo,” Iwata continued, “the video game industry entered into a period where its traditional methods of market expansion were no longer working.”
