Sony trying to turn PSP into a telephony device

Sony is failing to challenge the domination of Nintendo DS handheld console in the market. The company is now trying to turn their PSP gadget into a telephony device.

They have announced a deal with BT to transform the PSP by adding wireless broadband communications functions.

This deal would enable the Sony PSP to handle high quality handheld video calls, voice calls and messaging.

The two companies signed on a four-year contract and they would together develop extra features for the PSP.

BT added in a statement that they are already working with other communications providers to deliver the new services and these would be launched in the UK first.

David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe added: “It’s very exciting for us to be partnering with BT on such a unique project. The opportunity to combine our market leading expertise with BT’s knowledge in communications opens up many possibilities and we look forward to bringing many exciting communication functions to PSP fans.”
