American Medical Association: Videogame addiction not a mental illness

The American Medical Association (AMA) has said in a report that they don’t believe that videogame addiction can be considered some kind of a mental illness.

However, the AMA did say that further research is required to study the problem before any conclusion can be made.

Market experts have been saying since a long time that videogame addiction is similar to addiction to drugs or alcohol. Gamers keeps on staying indulged into this habit without realizing that they are in trouble.

Doctors in the US have been considering including ‘excessive gameplay’ in the American Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders but the AMA has now opposed the inclusion of video game addiction in the 2012 Manual.

This manual is used by the American Psychiatric Association.
