Sony PlayStation 3 is revealed by Sony Corporation
Entertainment giant and the current market leader in the gaming console market, unveiled their next generation gaming console Sony PlayStation 3. In fact, the company claims that this console for the first time would bring real-time dimension to video games when it goes on sale next year.
However, they are not the first one out of the block. Microsoft has already showcased their efforts in the Microsoft Xbox 360 and they are in fact expected to launch their products before Sony brings PlayStation 3 to the market.
Sony would be bringing PlayStation 3 with the newly developed and in their words, world’s most advanced Cell processor, which is 35 times as powerful as the PlayStation 2. This was claimed in a statement from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCEI).
And the good thing about this new console is that it would support all the existing titles for the previous and current generation PlayStations. It also would support DVD playback capabilities and would come with support for the Sony’s next generation Blu-Ray format DVD Disks.
However, the problem for Sony is that they would miss out on the crucial holiday season around the Christmas and New Year when the sales of entertainment devices are generally at their peak. Though, the company is confident of beating Microsoft in the field.
A senior representative from the company, Ken Kutaragi said in a statement: “Empowered by the Cell processor with super-computer like performance, a new age of PlayStation 3 is about to begin. In games, not only will movement of characters and objects be far more refined and realistic but landscapes and virtual worlds can also be rendered in real-time, thereby elevating the freedom of graphics expression to levels not experienced in the past. Gamer’s will literally be able to dive into the realistic world seen in large-screen movies.”
The other player in the market and the once leader in the gaming console market Nintendo is also expected to come out with their next generation console named Revolution. However, in the recent years, it has lost its market share badly to Sony and is expected to be a hit amongst traditional Nintendo fans.

I think Sony should come up with a marketing scheme whereby they sell some games for the PS2 at holiday time with a certificate (or something) for a free PS3 game upon release. That may help hold off the rival Xbox from gaining share because it is on the market for the holidays. In essence they should use FUD the same way MS normally does.
