Sony announces an updated slimmer Playstation Portable
Sony has announced that they would soon be releasing a slimmer updated Playstation Portable handheld gaming device as they aim to take on the dominating Nintendo DS player in this segment of the market.
This new model would be available in the market this coming September. Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai spoke about this updated PSP model: “From a distance, this PSP might not look very different from the current model … but when you have it in your hand, the difference becomes quite clear. It’s actually 33 percent lighter than the current PSP. It’s also 19 percent slimmer.”
The company announced this updated model at the ongoing E3 video game exposition.
Nintendo DS is dominating the handheld gaming device segment with sales touching 23.6 million DS units in the year ended March 2007. In comparison Sony managed to sell just around 8.4 million PSP units.
Sony PSP updated edition would sell for about $170 which is the same price as that of the current generation model. Nintendo sell their DS device for $130.
