Nintendo: Wii Shortage to continue in the near future

Nintendo Wii has been the surprise package of the next generation gaming consoles. It was launched in November last year and it still remains highly in demand.

The company is unable to fulfill the sales resulting in massive shortage. It is still practically impossible to find an unsold unit in retail stores in the US market.

As a result, the console continues to sell at a premium on auction sites including eBay where it sells for prices around USD 400.

Nintendo Wii is the cheapest of the three next generation products in the market which includes the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3.

George Harrison, Senior VP of marketing at Nintendo has now said in a statement that they are expecting the shortage to continue in the near future.

He said: “There is no guarantee that we are not going to have ‘out-of-stocks’ this holiday season. If you see one, buy it. Don’t hesitate. Don’t assume that you can come back later and find one.”

Ken Toyoda, a Nintendo Japan spokesperson added: “Judging from the current situation, the region is probably expecting a shortage of the machines. The situation in the Japanese market is not yet clear, but there probably won’t be a shortage like last year.”

Nintendo further claimed in a press statement that the Wii gaming console had been sold out every week for the 33 weeks since its launch in November of last year.
