Nintendo sees little challenge from cheaper Sony Playstation 3 console

Sony just recently announced their decision to drop the price of the 60 GB Playstation 3 console in the US market.

Nintendo has responded back by saying that this price cut is unlikely to affect the sales of their Nintendo Wii console.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata further confirmed in a statement that the hardware side of its Wii game console business has turned profitable.

This is impressive considering both Sony and Microsoft continues to make huge losses on sales of their console units. The companies are betting on sales of the software and content for these consoles to turn the divisions profitable.

Nintendo Wii continues to outsell both Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3 in the markets around the world since the global launch in November last year.

I agree that Nintendo shouldn’t be concerned, but this is most likely because Nintendo is in it’s own little secluded world. To start off, Nintendo had a decent E3, but Microsoft and especially Sony excelled with this year’s expo with amazing new games. Sure, Nintendo can create a product that sells well, but that doesn’t make it a better console. It only sells well because it’s cheaper, and more child-oriented. That’s the truth, and you can argue that the Wii isn’t focused solely on young gamers, but with games like Ratatouille, Cars, The Ant Bully, Barnyard, Happy Feet, Shrek, and Spongebob, to name a few, the Wii appears to be a children’s playground compared to the Xbox 360’s Halo 3 and Gears of War, as well as the Playstation 3’s Resistance, Metal Gear Solid 4, Warhawk, and Lair. Personally, I beleive the price cut was a great move on Sony’s behalf, and the sales will improve. The Playstation 3 and Wii sales shouldn’t even be compared. It’s like apples and oranges. The Wii is a cheap console with innovative controllers, and a large fanbase. The Playstation 3 is a more expensive, stronger console that can process beautiful graphics, animations, and play massive games with the help of Blu Ray. If you want to compare prices, let’s set both consoles at $300, start from zero, and see how well they sell.

It’s just a shame the price-drop is only a temporary one so Sony can launch a new model to price at $600. Yes! Back to its old price once more!
As for setting both console’s prices to $300… well, I still think both consoles would sell well.

Cry some more, Chris. I don’t understand why everyone needs to argue who has the better console. Does yours selling the most make it more fun? If so, I hope you don’t have a ps3.

Man I’m so sick of some people calling the wii kiddie. I mean come on I thought that shit died out in the N64 and early GCN years what the hell??? Here I am 19 going on 20 years old and apparently my wii isn’t for my age group. Maybe I should hold off on getting MP3, no more heroes, SC:legends, MOH:Heroes2, and of course SSBB and SMG. That’s not even the whole list of games that I want alone. P.S. alot of those kiddie games you listed are also on the 360 too’-~ ‘-~.

    LOL at Chris’s Comment!

“with games like Ratatouille, Cars, The Ant Bully, Barnyard, Happy Feet, Shrek, and Spongebob, to name a few, the Wii appears to be a children’s playground” Games like this are released for all Consoles, these are the types of games released on all Consoles not just Wii, i mean check the PS2 theres millions of games just like the ones uve stated.

Funny how you then compare those titles which i admit dont interest me at all with games such as Halo 3 Gears of War? How is that even fair lol? Wii does have quality titles that do appeal to the age group your talking about with Halo and Gears of War. I loved Zelda and Mario Strikers and cant wait for Metriod, SSBB, Resident Evil.

The only differance is Wii has other titles aswell that appeal to different audiences, which dont often get reviewed highly because they dont please core gamers but they please their audience which is profit for Wii.

This is the best thing about Nintendo’s position. They don’t have to worry about selling games and making games great while minimizing console manipulation. Nintendo because it makes money on both hardware and software can afford to innovate the Wii and change it while at the same time creating new games that use the new features, for example Wii Fit. Whereas Sony and Microsoft have to keep their consoles the way they are (for the most part). Hardware innovation cannot happen because the already high prices can go up even higher. Wii has a good price cushon of about $100 extra so buying new controllers and/or add-ons don’t make you feel like you’ve sold your soul. Overall I believe people want better and more real graphics but the majority of people want a new play scheme rather than just moving a stick and pressing buttons in sequences. There is no arguing that real aiming is much more fun and realistic than using a stick to aim. As just on example.

the price drop is great for the consumer… i don’t see why nintendo would be concerned about playstation’s attempt to make its own console more of a reality to a buyer

sure… if consumer “a” could afford a $200 system but not anything else… that system would be picked up very easily… however, if consumer “b” had the cash and proper money management… all three systems would be bought

it just doesn’t seem at all that important. we all know people are waiting for the ps3 to be much more affordable than it is right now. and to get that next gen fix, the wii will do.

just to show consumers such as “b” exist, i still own nes, sega genesis, nintendo 64, dreamcast, playstion 2 and an xbox. no xbox 360 game interests me right now, nor does one on the ps3 front. the wii… is well, not for me. cause my nes is still kicking :D and my $1500 dollar pc is giving me that first person shooter online multiplayer fix

so yeah… drop that price sony, keep sending out unreal based games xbox & friends, and wii… i think you should make rare’s goldeneye multiplayer online… and more than 4 players please :D lol
