Sony to stop manufacturing the original Playstation Portable

Sony has now confirmed that they would phase out the older generation Playstation Portable by September this year.

The company just recently announced a slimmer version of their handheld gaming device which competes with the Nintendo DS console.

There is more disappointing news for the gamers in the USA as the company also is going to stop the manufacturing of the 60 GB PS3 gaming console to concentrate on the just recently announced variant with a 80 GB hard disk.

Senior Public Relations Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment America, Patrick Seybold was quoted as saying to the media personals: “The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won’t be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.”

This means that the just announced price cut is only temporary as the gamers would still be required to pay USD 599 for the only available PS3 console in the US market in the coming months.
