Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend

Most fans of the Tomb Raider games were extremely disappointed in the last Lara Croft game, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. The game had poor controls, botched stealth, and was not fun to play at all, lacking all the good things in the franchise’s previous installments. Everyone thought this was the end of the Tomb Raider franchise.

Everyone, that is, except Eidos Interactive. Core Design, the team behind AoD were ignored in favor of Crystal Dynamics, fresh from their success on Project Snowblind. Whether it turned out to be a good decision remains to be seen, but the game does look a lot more interesting and Lara Croft-ish considering its back to the Jungle approach. I was sick of the cityscape in AoD.

Taking a leaf out of many newer games, the many diverse Tomb levels like Peru, Himalayas, and Bolivia are seamless and loaded just once. Not surprising considering it uses the Snowblind engine, which is also capable of some very neato lightin tricks. Her character model has also been tweaked to make her look more acrobatic. That still does not mean she is flat chested though. Far from it. The puzzles have also been tricked up; more akin to the prince of Persia games, that is a mix of cerebral and the physical.

While it remains to be seen how the story blends into the gameplay and more importantly how the game itself plays out, this is something current generation console owners and Tomb Raider enthusiasts can look forward to.

I am glad to see Tomb Raider back. I hope it’s way better than AOD. Looking at screen shots it looks great. It must be with Toby Gard back, the man behind Lara Croft and if he could please back in 1996 then he will be able to please in 2005!
