Xbox cable problems bigger than expected

Microsoft has reported that the problem with the power cords of the first generation Xbox is bigger than they previously estimated. They are now advising the owners of the Xbox gaming consoles in Britain and Ireland to apply for replacement. The consoles manufactured as recently as January 2005 are reported to be suffering from the same problem, which can lead to fire hazards.

The company first announced the cable replacement problem way back in February. It applied on almost 14.1 million owners of the Xbox gaming console. The latest alert from the company says: “We have recently determined that in the UK and Republic of Ireland a small number of consoles manufactured between October 23, 2003 and January 14, 2005, require a new replacement cord as well”.

The fault with the power cord has already reportedly caused smoke damage, or minor damage to a carpet or entertainment centre in more than 20 cases reported worldwide. And the company is advising the owners of Xbox manufactured prior to January 14 2005 to apply for the replacement scheme.

Owners can apply for the scheme at Xbox.com website or call 0800 0289276 to receive a free card replacement. The company admits that the replacement might take a couple of weeks to arrive to the owners of the gaming console and advices owners to avoid using the device during that period.
