Microsoft Xbox 360 might come with HD DVD Support
The latest collaborative deal between Microsoft and Toshiba has led to these new rumors. Even Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has admitted that the final specification of the Xbox 360 might be evolved to something better. And the possibilities include support for the next generation DVD format HD DVD being developed by the team led by Toshiba.
Gates was speaking at the joint event with HD-DVD creator Toshiba in Tokyo and said that Microsoft was committed to standards. There is a fight going on between the Sony camp and the Toshiba camp over the standards for the next generation DVD format. Sony has already declared that the PlayStation 3 would be coming with support for their Blu-Ray format discs.
Gates said: “The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today’s DVD format. We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else.” However, this would result in problems for the game developers, as they would have to avoid supporting games in HD DVD format, as the first generation Xbox 360 owners will not be able to play them.
One of the interesting statements from the chairman of Microsoft was that the Xbox 360 would be joined over time by models with additional functionality. These features are expected to enhance the functionality of the device to serve as a digital entertainment center for homes.
