Microsoft: HD DVD losing the format war won’t hurt Xbox 360

Microsoft Xbox 360 currently offers only a HD DVD drive as an add-on. Customers cannot get a Blu-Ray media drive to connect to this next generation gaming console.

Sony on the other hand ships all their Playstation 3 consoles with an integrated Blu-Ray drive.

Toshiba has just announced that they are considering getting out of the format war by ending their HD DVD efforts.

Microsoft has now stated that the Xbox 360 gaming console would not be affected by this new development in the market.

The software giant said in a statement: “We do not believe the recent reports about HD DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. We will wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans around the Xbox 360 HD DVD player.”

However, it must be noted here that the company just recently reduced the price of the HD DVD attachment for the Xbox 360 console. It almost feels like that they knew about Toshiba’s announcement beforehand.
