Reports: Microsoft wants a Blu-Ray drive for Xbox 360

Microsoft and Sony are major rivals in the videogame console market.

Microsoft has the Xbox 360 console fighting it out in the market against Sony Playstation 3.

Sony ships their PS3 console with a Blu-Ray drive. Microsoft has stopped the production of the HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 console after Toshiba backed out from the HD DVD industry.

Microsoft is now said to be in talks with Sony to develop an add-on Blu-Ray drive for their Xbox 360 console.

This could be crucial for them as the console is unable to play the next generation media on its own. With HD DVD losing the format war, Sony has an edge with their PS3 to lure in more users who wants a complete package.

Microsoft has officially declined to comment on the rumor. The company said: “Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available.”

Sony on the other hand had this to say: “If Microsoft wants to release Gears of War 3 on a Blu-ray Disc; I think we can make that happen.”
