Tapwave discontinues Zodiac gaming machine
The war between Sony Playstation Portable and Nintendo Gameboy/DS has claimed another victim in the market. The portable gaming machine market is now dominated largely by Sony’s debut product which somewhat has managed to beat Nintendo’s domination in this market for a long time. It came out in the market before Sony could release their PSP though their was no competition between the two when it came to marketing strategies.
The gaming device failed to capture the interest of the end consumer who went all out to Sony’s offering. The announcement was made on the website of the company and they also said that they are taking away the service and support for its Zodiac line as of July 25. The company has not issued any other statement regarding this issue.
The gaming console came out in 2003 and used the popular Palm operating system and attempted to combine the functionality of a PDA with a gaming machine. The company’s website said about their decision to discontinue this product: “We thank you for your past interest and support and apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused.”
The device also integrated other functionalities like digital music player, photo viewer, and eBook reader in a 6.3-ounce gadget that sold for about $270. The users of this machine would be disappointed as they are practically stuck with a dud device with few applications out supporting this gaming machine.

Way to pull your figures out your ass, techwack. The DS is trouncing the psp in overall sales and software sales aren’t even close. Get a clue, morons!!

Fortunately, nobody will take that sony fanboy article seriously since the author lacks even the most basic grasp of the english language.

“The portable gaming machine market is now dominated largely by Sonyâ??s debut…”
“The[tapwave]gaming device failed to capture the interest of the end consumer who went all out to Sonyâ??s offering”
what are you talking about!!!! the nintendo DS is slaying the psp in japan and looks likely to do the same in the US where the games which have caused the DS to dominate in japan are soon to be released. i personnally prefer the psp but it appears most people prefer the ds.
and when you combine the sales for nintendo’s other portable, the gameboy advance, you can see sony has a long way to catch up.
Japanese Sales Charts, Week Ending July 24th [from gamasutra.com http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=6065
“Despite there being only one major new Nintendo DS release this week, the portable console only strengthened its lead as the best-selling console in Japan. Not only did it sell 41,982 units for a 41.36 percent share of the hardware market, but it also surpassed the PlayStation 2 as the best selling console of the year in Japan. 1,190,762 Nintendo DSes have now been sold this year in Japan, compared to 1,184,584 PlayStation 2 consoles and 1,060,529 PSP handhelds.”
next time do a little research before you make statements like that

Um… I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but Sony has not ‘managed to beat Nintendoâs domination in this market’. Nintendo has reported over 5 million sales of the Nintendo DS alone, meanwhile, still selling thousands upon thousands of Nintendo Gameboy Advance consoles every month; and, of course, Sony claims to have sold 2.5 million PSP consoles. But even then, not even 2 million have been resold to consumers. The last time I checked, dominance was not determined by the fact that you have fewer sales in the market…

This isn’t a surprise. Sony and Nintendo have been way ahead of the game, and for a company like Tapwave to come out with a handheld system that has Palm integration is just plain stupid. Wrong market, wrong product. Game downloads stick to a certain market. Tyco sticks to a certain market. When will companies learn??
