Rage on Xbox 360 could suffer due to compression technologies

id Software has revealed that their upcoming gaming title Rage would probably look worse on the Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming console compared to Sony Playstation 3.

The developers said that the royalties charged by Microsoft on multi-disc games mean that they would ship the title on two DVDs instead of three.

This means that they would have to go with more compression leading to probably poorer quality of the gaming content.

Sony Playstation 3 uses Blu-Ray discs which have much more capacity compared to DVDs.

Sony lists this capability as one of the major advantages of PS3 compared to Xbox 360 and looks like the time has come when Xbox 360 is going to suffer.

Hasn’t really been a huge factor w/ Multi-plat games thus far, but as predicted by Sony, it’s not becoming an issue. In your face, naysayers.

When was the last time x360 had a game as big as the last metal gear ? give it a year and soon it’ll happen. Executives at sony plans years ahead, soon good games on xbox360 will have 2-3 and will need a lift fan to cool it dics if that is next gen? I have both I know what I’m talking about.

Carmack’s written (from scratch) more game engines than probably anyone else in the industry, so when he makes statements like these – you know it’s the truth:

    Quotes from 1up’s intrvw:

    GPU:
On almost anything on the strictly graphical side, in terms of pushing vertexes and triangles on there, the 360’s hardware is superior to the PS3’s RSX. If you’re just pushing allot of fragments across it, the 360 will be faster in almost all cases.
You have to push hard to find cases where the graphics side would ever be any better [on the PS3].

    CPU’s:
. Given a finite time of development time it’s much, MUCH easier to get things working well on the 360 than it is on the PS3.

    Memory:
The other major difference is the memory partitioning, and one of the biggest things that Sony does poorly for developers is their system stuff sucks up allot more resources than Microsoft’s does on the 360, so memory is MUCH more painful on the PS3.We spend a lot more time trying to crunch down the memory for that, as well as optimizing up the graphics rasterization for performance.

    Storage:
That’s the only real advantage that the PS3 has over the 360 from our point of view is the extra space.

    Overall:
It’s almost unequivocal across the board that the 360’s a better platform to develop for.

Glad to know we can finally put the PS3 vs 360 debate to rest. 360 clearly wins.

It’s a shame games will grow too big for the 360 soon. It looks like the n64 all over again. More power, way less space.

PS3 disk size means nothing as you dont game off of the PS3 disk. You install the game on the ps3 drive.
Yes the PS3 has one install and one play disk (same disk) The 360 fall update will let us install on the 360 drive. Three install disks with one play disk. After the install any PS3 advantage will disappear.
So we are talking about a 25 cent royality that Ms has in place to stop developers from being lazy with fat code. Stupid story about old news that changes nothing as both systems have good and bad points. The all powerfull bluray reads to slow to game off the disk so Sony MUST install. The all powerfull 360 uses DVD and its to small so it MUST install… Both suck in this respect.

The bitter pill this xmas will be that the 360 installs the game 50% faster than the Ps3.

    PS3 fan boy article,

I love these, its fun to say that your supper computer like Jack was saying, doesn’t even have enough memory (FYI its 256MB Xbox 360 has 512MB). Its like buying a Lamborghini Diablo with a V6 engine. PS3 out-puts Blue Ray movies at 60Hz refresh rate. When a real Blue Ray player does it at 120Hz. Ya, you guys say 360 is gonna have storage issue by next year. News flash to all of you, Sony is gonna have memory issues. Memory is not fixable, but storage is, you can always make it a two disc or three disc game. But what would you do if you don’t have enough ram? Buy a PS4 JK =o)~
