EA sued: Over Spore DRM!
EA had just announced that they have now sold more than 1 million copies of Spore videogame worldwide.
the latest news in is that the company is now facing a class action lawsuit connected to the game.
The problem is the DRM technology that comes bundled with the game on the PC platform.
The technology stops the gamer from installing the game more than 3 times on a machine.
EA had some time back announced that they were loosening this limitation.
However, the lawsuit is related to the SecuROM program which is installed along with the game on the user’s system.
SecuROM is the DRM technology that stops the user from installing the game on the system too many times.
The lawsuit states: “Although consumers are told the game uses access control and copy protection technology, consumers are not told that this technology is actually an entirely separate, stand-alone program which will download, install, and operate on their computer. Once installed, it becomes a permanent part of the consumer’s software portfolio. Even if the consumer uninstalls Spore, and entirely deletes it from their computer, SecuROM remains a fixture on their computer unless and until the consumer completely wipes their hard drive through reformatting or replacement of the drive.”
