Nintendo DSi would be region locked

Japanese videogame console maker Nintendo has confirmed reports that their upcoming update to Nintendo DS handheld console named DSi would be region locked.

This means that gamers would not be able to play media coded for other countries.

This is somewhat surprising considering DS and Game Cube are free of any such locks.

Nintendo said that this limitation was necessary for the DSi as it is more than just a gaming console.

The company aims to provide online services which are different for separate regions.

Nintendo said: “DSi embeds net communication functionality within itself and we are intending to provide net services specifically tailored for each region. Also because we are including parental control functionality for Nintendo DSi and each region has its unique age limit made by different independent bodies.”

The company however said that all the games for the platform would be playable on any DS or DS Lite.
