Sony ships more than 10 million units of Playstation Portable

Sony Playstation Portable is a hit. If you had any doubts in your mind, Sony has a number for you. And that is 10 million units sold in the markets around the world since its launch. The company revealed this information on Friday confirming that they have had massive success with their first generation handheld gaming console.

The company had launched Sony PSP less than a year ago on Dec. 12, 2004, in Japan. It was later launched in March in the United States followed by a delayed launch in Asia in May and Europe in September. The figures of 10 million in less than a year mean that this is the most successful Playstation launch in Sony’s history.

The company has their best performance in the United States where they have sold more than 4.5 million units. Japan has seen sales figures of more than 3 million units. Europe is the newest market for the gaming console and hence just 2.5 million units have been sold in this region since its launch.

Sony also claimed that there are around 183 software titles available and total shipments of games itself have reached an impressive 19.6 million units. Just two units of games per console is somewhat not impressive. But then, Sony PSP is more than just a gaming machine. It can now play music, let you surf the internet and even watch streamed television in supported markets.
