Nigeria unhappy with Sony Playstation 3 Ad
Sony recently dropped the price of their Playstation 3 gaming console.
The company launched a marketing campaign highlighting this aspect.
The ad featured a pseudo Sony representative named Kevin Butler (Director of Rumor Confirmation).
He is asked about the online rumors of a price cut on PS3 by Rumor Monger Bernie Buncalan.
He responds: “You can’t believe everything you read on the Internet. Otherwise I’d be a Nigerian millionaire by now.”
He is of course referring to the infamous Nigerian 419 scammers.
Nigerian government is offended by the ad. The government is demanding an apology from the company: “Nigeria also demands an unconditional apology from Sony Corporation for this deliberate negative campaign against the country’s image and reputation”.
Here is the advertisement:
Update:
Sony has apologized for this advertisement. The company said that this ad was not supposed to be broadcast outside the USA.
The company said: “It has come to our attention that a recent TV advertisement for PlayStation may have offended some members of the Nigerian community. We never intended to create a situation that would upset anyone, and we have taken action to immediately remove the advertisement from the air. We apologise to anyone this may have offended.”
The controversial line
“Otherwise I’d be a Nigerian millionaire by now.”
has been replaced by:
“You can’t believe everything you read on the internet – that’s how World War I started.”

Classic, I'm buying a PS3 now. Nigeria even moaned about District 9 and how that movie puts them in a bad light. Granted, Nigeria is a 3rd world country with serious problems, but that's just the thing. They need to sort themselves out. Deal with the rampant corruption, scams and crime and for the lack of a better phrase "harden the F-up".
