Nintendo Revolution to have parental control over games rating

If you are a parent afraid of the kind of games your kid might be playing on that gaming console you bought him last Christmas, you still have some hope for the future. Nintendo has announced that they are going to implement a parent control mechanism on their Revolution gaming console letting the parents decide on what kind of games their kids can plan on that machine.

This system would be similar in feature to the one present in the upcoming Microsoft Xbox 360. They can setup a password to lock the facility of playing games of a particular genre. By using a password-controlled setting, parents can decide what level of play they’ll allow younger players from E (Everyone), E10+ (Everyone 10 years and Older), T (Teen) or M (Mature) following the guidelines laid out by ESRB; whilst the UK model will follow the categories issued by ELSPA/PEGI 3+, 7+, 12+, 16+ or 18+.

Nintendo itself does not develop any games, which are unsuitable for young children. However, this announcement does seem to indicate that they would like game developers to consider Revolution as a possible console for their games. Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing said in a statement: “Even though many Nintendo games are rated E, E10+, or T, we believe this kind of feature should be included in the hardware. It’s the right thing to do.”

He added: “Game ratings are on the front and back of every game package, so families can easily make a decision about whether a game is right for them”.
