Sony acquires makers of Killzone game, Guerrilla Games

Entertainment giants and the maker of the awesome Playstation gaming machines Sony has decided to acquire Guerrilla Games. The company is known for their Sony Playstation 2 game Killzone. Sony took this decision with the aim of expanding their game development arm for the future consoles as they now face some tough competition from the software giants Microsoft.

Sony and Guerrilla Games are not unknown to each other. The two companies have worked together in the past and have had a close relationship for over a year now. Guerrilla had already signed on an exclusive development agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment in March 2004. And the game Killzone has been a massive success for the Playstation 2 gaming console with more than 2 million units sold worldwide.

Guerrilla Games is currently working on a new version of this popular game for the Playstation 3 gaming console from Sony which is due to come out sometime next year. A PSP based version is also under development. And reports claim that the previews of this game are pretty darn impressive on the PS3 gaming console.

Guerrilla MD Hermen had this to say on the acquisition news: “Sony Computer Entertainment – with its truly global presence, leading platforms, and commitment to innovation – is an ideal partner for Guerrilla and we are delighted to take our existing relationship to the next level”.

SCE Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison said in a statement on this news: “Guerrilla have a great combination of creative, technical and production talent in their team and we have enjoyed a close working relationship with their management and staff for a number of years. As we prepare for the launch of PlayStation 3 next year, this acquisition strengthens our development portfolio to take full advantage of the exciting entertainment opportunities provided by PSP, PlayStation 3 and beyond.”
