Sony aiming to double sales of PSP in America

Entertainment giant Sony has plans to double the sales of their Sony Playstation Portable gaming device in the North American market. The aim is to sell around 6 million units of Sony PSP by the end of the year. The gaming console has been pretty successful in the American market with its sharp screen and small size.

However, the success of PSP has no match to the high demand and popularity of the other hot gizmo in the market, the Apple iPod. Market experts also believe that Sony PSP is expected to have a long and successful run in the market though some gamers have complained about the lack of punch in the processing power and buttons being uncomfortable.

Sony Computer Entertainment America President and Chief Executive Kaz Hirai said in a statement that the company aims to double its install base by selling between 2.5 million and 3 million additional PSPs in North America by year-end. Sony representative Molly Smith added: “We’re mapping to that forecast … We’re very comfortable with where we are.”

Japanese gaming company Nintendo is their main rivals in this market and their Nintendo DS console has also been pretty successful. However, while Nintendo is targeting younger audience with their games, Sony’s PSP is targeted at a much mature and hardcore game playing audience.

Sony claims that they have around 70 titles available for their PSP in the Japanese market.
