Hackers complete first step in decoding Xbox 360 discs

Software giant Microsoft launched their next generation gaming console Xbox 360 last month. And the hackers are already working hard on cracking the copy protection of the media to enable gamers run pirated gaming media. As per latest media reports, they have completed the first step. A Dutch hacker group has worked out how to “dump” the contents of game discs for the system.

This enables them to copy the content of the disc onto the hard disc and examine it. However, they are yet to find a way to make the console play this copied content. The group calls itself Team PI Coder and they have in fact publicly released the details of the file system for the game discs. In addition, they have also released a utility to extract files from the game discs.

Experts believe that this is just the first step into replicating the mod formula for earlier generation gaming consoles. There are modified gaming consoles available in the market, which enables the consumers to play pirated gaming material on them. In fact, three such sellers of modified Xbox systems were arrested recently on charges of breaking the law.

Microsoft would not be very afraid right now considering hackers have still not managed to find out ways to get this copied media work with the gaming console. The company has claimed that they learnt from the mistakes they committed with Xbox related to its security. And the Xbox 360 comes with stringent security measures.
