Nintendo DS crosses 10 million sales landmark

Japan based videogame console maker Nintendo has announced that they have sold more than 10 million units of their handheld gaming machine Nintendo DS in the worldwide markets. This includes sales of 4 million in North America and more than 5 million in Japan. Nintendo faces competition from the Sony Playstation Portable gaming machine in this segment.

Perrin Kaplan, vice president for marketing at Nintendo’s U.S. headquarters in Redmond added that the company managed to sell around 3 million units of Nintendo DS in the United States in the year 2005. Nintendo had launched this handheld gaming machine in the US market in November 2004.

In comparison, Sony has claimed that they have sold 3.2 million of its handheld game system Sony PSP in North America between its March launch and mid-December. The final figures for the year 2005 are yet to be released by the entertainment giant who are scheduled to launch their next generation gaming console Sony Playstation 3 later this year.

Nintendo also released the figures for the users of their recently launched Wi-Fi system for playing games online. The company said that about 550,000 people worldwide have used Nintendo DS’s Wi-Fi system. In addition, they also managed to sell 4.6 million units of their older gaming machine Game Boy Advance, to North American consumers in 2005.
