Peter Moore admits Blu-Ray attachment a possibility for Xbox 360

Sony and Toshiba are the two leaders of the rival groups developing their own DVD formats for the next generation storage systems. Sony is heading the group developing the Blu-Ray format, while Toshiba is working on HD DVD Drive. Sony on their part has also announced that they are going to ship their upcoming gaming console, Playstation 3 with a Blu-Ray drive.

This puts Microsoft in a tough position. They cannot support this drive because they are competing with Sony Playstation 3 with their Xbox 360 gaming console. And the HD DVD drives were not ready for the time of the launch of their console. The company recently claimed that they aim to finally support the content on HD DVD discs by shipping an external drive for the existing owners of Xbox 360.

However, there is more interesting news coming in. Microsoft’s Xbox corporate VP of worldwide marketing and publishing Peter Moore has now admitted that an add-on Blu-Ray drive might be a possibility for the Xbox 360 if HD DVD loses the battle for the next generation storage format. The reason behind such a disclosure is that no one knows till now on which format of these two would become the crowd’s favorite. Sony has taken the gamble of shipping PS3 with a Blu-Ray drive and Microsoft is playing it safe by providing add-on drives.

Microsoft might face another minor hurdle in the longer run with their Xbox 360 as they have no plans to support gaming content shipped on HD DVD discs. Sony on the other hand would perhaps welcome more developers to develop ultra high quality games with no worries for shipping media as the large capacities of Blu-Ray discs would take care of it.
