Sony reveals details on PlayStation Network Platform
Entertainment giants Sony has revealed some details on their planned online service, which would be launched along with their upcoming next generation gaming console Playstation 3. The company is ensuring that they won’t make the same mistakes they committed with the launch of PS2 considering no official online gaming platform was made available by the company.
Microsoft has managed to successfully implement the Xbox Live service earning both revenues and praises from the gamers using the Xbox and Xbox 360 gaming consoles. Sony has said that with their Playstation Network Platform, they expect to make digital downloading — including games, movies and music — a high priority in the next generation.
Phil Harrison, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios said in a statement that he is seeing the movement from the product era to the services era where companies can make more revenues by providing online services in addition to providing software offline for the platform.
Publishers for the PS3 platform would be able to produce episodic content and offer them through this online platform. In addition, users would also get other content like movies, music and television shows for download.
Market analysts are however not very impressed by Sony’s commitments, as they believe that Sony set themselves huge standards and later fails to meet them. Sony has already delayed the launch of Playstation 3 gaming console several times and if they fail to match the consumer expectation with their online service, it is going to disappoint a lot of gamers in the market.
