HD-DVD drive for Microsoft Xbox 360

As per incoming news reports, Microsoft has confirmed that they would be launching the Xbox 360 HD DVD attachment in the near future. More details are expected to be released this coming E3.

This move would help the Xbox 360 owners to enjoy HD games and movies on their consoles. Toshiba has just launched the first HD DVD players in the US market and they have sold out pretty quickly.

Interestingly, Sony is going to launch their Playstation 3 gaming console equipped with a Blu-Ray drive. This makes their console expensive to purchase, but the important thing is that developers would be able to use the extra storage capabilities of the Blu-Ray technology to make their games.

HD DVD for Xbox 360 is not expected to be used for gaming media as the company has already clarified it before. One of the Microsoft executive even made a dig on the Sony’s Blu-Ray technology still not available in the market: “Blu-ray right now reminds us of another technology from Sony: Betamax. A bit like VHS — we think that HD DVD is the format that consumers, film studios, and publishers will embrace.”

Microsoft is hoping that the HD technology based games would become popular in the coming days as they expect to provide more than 50 new high-definitions Xbox 360 games by June this year.
