Sony depending upon TVs and Vaio computers to counter PS3 costs
Sony Electronics is depending upon their profitable ventures like the flat screen TVs and Vaio computers to help them counter the high input costs of the upcoming Sony Playstation 3 gaming console and the Blu-Ray DVD drive.
Sony is due to launch its Blu-Ray players and discs in the market sometime next month and the Sony Playstation 3 gaming console is due to arrive later this year. Both these devices cost the company a lot of resources and financial investments and they would have to sell them at a loss in the initial stages.
This requires them to maintain their profitability and domination in the other segments of the industry.
Stan Glasgow, president and chief operating officer of Sony Corp.’s electronics arm said in a statement: “It’s going to take a little time to make the money back. We are looking for profitability in our television business, our camera business, our Vaio business — they will fund those investments.”
The company is taking on formidable challengers in both the markets. Sony PS3 would take on Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii while the Blu-Ray technology is taking on Toshiba’s rival HD DVD technology.
