Nintendo targeting Wii at elderly and female gamers

Nintendo is due to launch their Wii gaming console in November this year and has said that first time gamers are one of their targeted audiences with this new product.

President Satoru Iwata added in a statement to the media: “We want to appeal to mothers who don’t want consoles in their living rooms, and to the elderly and to young women. It’s a challenge, like trying to sell cosmetics to men.”

Nintendo would be taking on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s Playstation 3 gaming console with Wii. The global market for videogame consoles is worth around USD 20 billion and Nintendo has been a smaller player since 1994.

Wii has the potential of helping the company achieve a broader market share with its low price and innovative game play.

However, gaming fans are not very happy with the pricing of the controllers for Wii, which are crucial for multiplayer game play on the device.
