Computer Architecture Group: Microsoft considering designing chips for next generation Xbox

Microsoft is primarily known for their software products. However, reports claim that the company is now considering designing its own chips.

In fact, a report in the New York Times claim that the company is now working on plans to develop the designs of the microprocessor for their next Xbox gaming console.

Microsoft relied on Intel processors for the first generation Xbox gaming console. The current generation Xbox 360 relies on a chip developed by IBM. The next console just might include an internally developed processor.

The company has formed a group named Computer Architecture Group and the design efforts for chips will initially be split between research labs at the headquarters in Redmond, Washington, and its Silicon Valley campus.
