Nintendo launches Wii gaming console
Japanese gaming console maker Nintendo has finally launched the much-awaited gaming console Nintendo Wii.
This console went on sale on Sunday and the launch was less dramatic when compared to the launch of the rival Sony Playstation 3 console as the company had ensured that enough units were made available in the stores at launch time.
This is a big launch for the company, which aims to take on both Sony and Microsoft to become the leading seller of videogame consoles worldwide.
Nintendo is gambling with the launch of Wii, as it does not sport high-end features present on consoles like PS3 and Xbox 360. However, it does offer intuitive game play, which the company hopes, would lure in a lot of non-gamers as well.
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime spoke about this console: “Tough choices about not including a DVD player at the start, tough choices about not including high-definition capability at the start. That’s because we wanted a mass-market price, and we believe the market will validate those decisions come launch day on this Sunday.”
Sony had made available around 400,000 units of their PS3 consoles at launch in the US market. Nintendo claimed that they had “five to ten” times as many Wiis available at launch.
