Xbox 360’s updated chip delayed
Chip manufacturer Chartered Semiconductor has reportedly postponed the mass production of its quieter and more efficient central processing unit for the massively popular Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming console.
Market sources claim that this chip might now be delayed by several months. The current processor powering the 360 runs on a 90nm chip. Chartered is planning to manufacture a processor based on a form factor of 65nm.
Microsoft and Chartered had announced this chip in April this year.
Chartered is already manufacturing the current generation processor in partnership with IBM for the Microsoft’s gaming console. The new technology would help them deliver a more power efficient processor and would also cut down the cost of the console.
Larry Yang, general manager of Xbox Console Development at Microsoft had said in the month of April on this new processor: “We plan to continue with our strategy of dual sourcing from Chartered and IBM’s fabs, which are operationally aligned and compatible, to give us the consistent product quality and flexibility we will need.”
