NPD Group: Sony sold 490,700 PlayStation 3 game consoles in the United States in December

Market research firm NPD Group has said that the Japanese gaming console maker Sony sold just around 490,700 units of their Playstation 3 console in the USA in the month of December.

If we combine the figures for the month of November, Sony would have sold around 687,700 PS3s in the US market in the year 2006.

Sony itself has said that they have shipped 1 million PS3s to North America in 2006. This figure however included other markets like Mexico and Canada.

NPD further revealed that Microsoft managed to sell 1.1 million of its competing Xbox 360 console in December. Nintendo also performed well with sales of 604,200 units of Nintendo Wii.

Anita Frazier, an analyst with NPD Group spoke about this report: “There was clearly a huge dearth of inventory of PS3s. This was the biggest month yet for Xbox 360 hardware sales, but is pretty in line with what an established system can do during the holidays. Xbox 360 is now poised to really take advantage of its lead in this generation’s race, provided they keep bringing the games to market that keep consumers wanting to play on that system.”

Sony however continued to dominate the scene with their older PS2 gaming console which sold 1.4 million units in December.
