Nintendo Wii was the top selling videogaming console in January

Market research firm NPD has claimed in a research reported that Nintendo Wii was the best-selling video game console in the United States in January.

Nintendo also boasted four of the top 10 games sold in the month of January. No wonder my mate in the United States failed to get me a unit of Wii as he could not locate one in any store near his place.

The research data from NPD shows that Wii sold as many as 436,000 units in January. Sony Playstation 2 (not 3) was the second best selling console in the market with sales of 299,000 units.

Both of these consoles continue to outsell both Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360.

December in comparison was a great month for Microsoft as they sold 1.1 million Xbox units. Nintendo managed to sell just around 604,000 Wii consoles that month.

The research report further said that the total sales of video game hardware and software hit $1.3 billion in January. U.S. game sales charts were topped by “Lost Planet: Extreme Condition”. Nintendo had four games in the top 10 while the Sony PS3 had one game in top 10.
