Sony Playstation 3 to get movie download functionality

Sony has said that they would add movie download feature to their Sony Playstation 3 gaming console. The console would also see inclusion of additional music and HDTV capabilities.

Phil Harrison, president of Sony’s worldwide studios further claimed that the PlayStation platform continues to evolve both in software and firmware revisions.

Harrison further said that it is possible that in the future, PS3’s hard drive capacity will be increased to take advantage of digital downloads and offer more storage options.

They have a 10 year long plan for the PS3 platform which would see the console get more features in addition to gaming facilities.

Sony’s addition of movie playing ability to the PS3 would put it in direct competition to Microsoft who recently launched a similar service on their Xbox 360 gaming console platform.

Owners of the Xbox 360 can purchase and download movies from the Microsoft Xbox Live Video Marketplace.

Forrester Research analyst Paul Jackson spoke about the future of gaming platforms: “When you have Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony all competing against each other for the same audience, you’re going to see the rollout of new games, new features, and different services.”
