IDC: Nintendo Wii to dominate this generation of videogame consoles

Market Research Company International Data Corporation has stated in a report that none of the three gaming consoles (PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii) is likely to see the domination Sony Playstation 2 had in the recent years.

Though, Nintendo Wii is likely to be the console which will out ship and outsell the 360 and PS3 in 2007 and 2008.

Nintendo is having a blockbuster time with the Wii sales. It continues to remain out of stock in most major markets. It has already sold more than 4 million units worldwide.

IDC added that Microsoft has the early mover advantage as it is currently leading the charts. Microsoft had launched the Xbox 360 in 2005, a year ahead of the rival consoles.

Microsoft and Sony have targeted the same gamer group, while Nintendo has a wider approach with their innovative game play.

Billy Pidgeon, program manager of IDC’s Consumer Markets: Gaming program added: “With the Wii, Nintendo is abdicating the specification war, leaving Sony and Microsoft to slug it out between themselves for the hardcore market. We believe concerted efforts to broaden the appeal of videogames beyond the traditional enthusiast/hardcore base will deepen the industry’s penetration. This is good news for an industry that seemed to be receding last year due to over-saturation of the core base.”

are these the same people who said the PS3 would overshadow everything and that the Wii had no chance a year a half ago, its great how they make predictions once the trend is obvious. Last time, they based it on previous markets for each company in the last generation. these people do not know the market as well as they think, and they defiantly know NOTHING about games. otherwise they would have seen how the Wii would have appealed to a large demographic earlier on.
