Sony PSP date with North America is set for March 24

After making big splash in the Japanese market, Sony is ready for a mega launch of the PSP gaming console in the American market on March 24. Sony confirmed this launch date of their portable video game system on Thursday. This would come as bad news for their chief competitor Nintendo who have ruled the handheld game console market since decades.

Nintendo is already present in the American market with their offerings in USD 80 Game Boy Advance SP and the recently launched dual-screen Nintendo DS. Sony’s offering is quite expensive in comparison at an estimated price of USD 250. They are also targeting a generally older and more technically advanced gamers compared to Nintendo’s market. Sony’s entry in this field is expected to grow the console market in the states currently worth around USD 10 billion.

Sony plans to launch the PSP in a value package initially which would include accessories and a copy of the movie “Spider-Man 2” on Sony’s new UMD disc format. This would give it a boost needed to attract away potential customers from cheaper Nintendo DS. However, critics believe Sony does not need to lure customers for their gaming machine considering its huge popularity and reputation in the market. However, a cheaper version is expected to be out in the market by the time holiday season hits America.

As for the titles for the PSP, Sony confirmed that they expect to make available 24 titles within two weeks of the launch. This would include most of the gaming giants and genres of gaming titles. Some of the expected initial offerings for the Sony PSP are rumored to be FIFA 2005 and Need for Speed Rivals.

psp is higher quality than anything nintendo EVER had to offer. you are holding a portable ps2, which is (still as a mobile gaming system) better and more powerful than gamecube, or nintendo ds for that matter.
