Microsoft admits they might support Blu-Ray if it wins the format war against HD DVD

Software giant Microsoft has become a major player in the videogame console market with their Xbox gaming console.

The company is competing against Sony and their Playstation 3 gaming console which comes loaded with a Blu-Ray drive.

Microsoft has already launched an HD DVD attachment for the Xbox 360 gaming console which provides similar functionality to the Blu-Ray drive included in the PS3.

However, Microsoft has now hinted that they might end up supporting the Blu-Ray format in the coming years if Sony manages to defeat Toshiba in this format war.

Sony is the developer of the Blu-Ray format while Toshiba developed the HD DVD format. Xbox UK head Neil Thompson was quoted as saying in the media: “Whatever format wins it is highly likely we will offer a solution. The only debate is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and pay the extra money for that feature. We prefer to offer the consumer choice.”

Blu-Ray will win the console war only because of the PS3. Also my advice for someone who is looking to buy a 360 or PS3. Wait until the fall.

So pick a winner already, I say Blu-Ray. All in favour-Eye. So it was decided by one drunken drop-out.
    Price needs to drop though.

The blu-ray drive in PS3 isn’t just for movies. It’s for more gaming content. Sony can fit larger maps, better textures and more code on a 50GB blu-ray disc than Microsoft can fit on the 10GB DVD9 that comes standard with an xbox 360.

Long term, of course Microsoft will need to switch to a higher-capacity optical drive in the 360 for gaming in order to stay competitive. And when you consider that, xbox 360 no longer has any price advantage over the PS3.

    lol

The only thing that extra capacity is useful for is the quality and length of FMV.. FMV is not crucial in making a good game, and is generally something a lot of us get annoyed at/skip over after seeing once.

Also, game developers would probably have a hard time utilising more than 10gb of textures/code/maps, even with the processing power of the ps3.

I agree! I am sick to my back teeth with people saying Blue Ray discs will mean games will be better on the PS3. Better data compression, better ram, better forms of texture mapping. Those are the things that make graphics better, not a bigger storage device.

Resistence:Fall of Man has very bland textures.
Most PS3 games look exactly the same as they did on the 360, 12 months ago,

So, please stop saying the extra storage space on a Blue Ray DVD will mean the games will be better.

HD DVD has no region coding, so you can buy those import movies without worries about whether or not they will work. The interactivity features are cool, but the combination HD DVD/DVD discs are the biggest winner for me. i can watch it in HD in my house, or take the disc and load it to Dad and still have it work on his standard player…..

I WANT HD DVD to win, but I don’t know if Universal, Weinstein, Porn, and a handful of independants can convince people who see an onslaught of BluRay only media from Sony/MGM, Fox, and Disney.

first off HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! M$ are teh loserzz.
Second off, people are saying that games that came out before on 360, and are now comming out for PS3 are the same textures and lighting.. .. Are you out of your minds ?
Go to http://www.gametrailers.com and watch the comparison of Oblivion 360 to Oblivion PS3. It’s a little close, but PS3 looks smoother, and brighter.

PS3 won’t be able to access the data fast enough BUT with method’s like uploading some files onto the HDD they get around this problem. Don’t be ignorant, your saying the same thing that people said when the PS2 came out. Blu-Ray will be needed, like it or not. Sony knows this, and so does Microsoft and a lot of developers.
