Folding@home is a hit amongst Playstation 3 users
Sony has just added support to their Playstation 3 gaming console to join the Stanford University’s Folding@home project. The owners of Sony PS3 gaming console can now contribute to the project by donating the computing hours of their consoles.
And within days of the launch, more than 30,000 gamers around the world have signed up to support the project through their gaming machines.
The project is using the distributing computing power to help study the causes of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cystic fibrosis and many cancers. Playstation 3 is a pretty strong computing machine much more capable than a regular PC to perform calculations and they are becoming a star contributor on the project.
Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and Folding@home project lead spoke on this project: “We’re thrilled to have SCE be part of the Folding@home project. With PS3 now part of our network, we will be able to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, with the goal of finding cures to some of the world’s most life-threatening diseases.”
