New York leaders furious over Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto IV developers have just released a trailer showcasing the upcoming game. Though the game is supposed to be based in an imaginary city named Liberty City.

The released trailer bears a closer resemblance to New York City featuring popular landmarks resembling Coney Island Cyclone, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and the MetLife Building.

This has led to protests from the political leaders in the city who claims that the concept of the game has nothing to do with the reality in the city.

New York City Councilman Peter Vallone, chairman of the Council’s Public Safety Committee said in a statement: “Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland.”

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly added: “It’s despicable to glamorize violence in games like these, regardless of how far-fetched the setting may be.”

Jason Post, a spokesman for Mayor Bloomberg had this to say: “The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers.”

It would be interesting to see if they take any legal actions against the developers of the game Rockstar Games.

The game is scheduled to be released later this year in October. It is being developed for the Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 platforms.

Where are these people getting their information from? In Raymond Kelly’s statement he says “It’s despicable to glamorize violence in games like these, regardless of how far-fetched the setting may be.” This statement is untrue. They do not glamorize violence, and if you start to go out and kill people in Grand Theft Auto then you will receive wanted stars and be chased down by the police.

Mayor Bloomburg even said that you earn points for killing police where you actually earn wanted stars; there is no cop killing point system in place in GTA.

I would imagine that these people have not even played the game. They may have just heard what it was about from people like Hillary Clinton, or Jack Thompson. They could have just seen people playing the game where they kill police men thinking that they must get points for doing that.

If these are the people who are in charge of New York and they don’t do any of their own research at all (or very bad research) when making public statements then what would stop them from doing the same for more important things like health care, or actual Grand Theft Autos?

It just really gets to me when people in high positions act as if they know something about what they are saying but in reality, they really have no clue.

Let me just say for 1 “THERE IS NO SAFE CITY IN AMERICA” we are one of the most hated country in the world, thats why we are at WAR,and 2 this is for that fat pig police officer dont hate on a video game your city is far worse then this game so do your job and take care of your streets I know 12 year olds on drugs, and carry guns thats the real promblem you need to worry about.I would love to see halo destroy disneyland or your “safe” city new york, these are just games that why they are called games, there only for entertainment and fun.So do what we are paying you guys to do, and worry about how to make this country a better place that we once were, and dont worry about what a video game should be.

these people are idiots, so shows like HEROES shouldn’t depict NYC being blown up or any of that because it’s “the safest city im America”..

It’s just a game, that’s rated M for mature, it’s no diffrent then all the Rated are movies that are shot in NYC locations with landmarks blowing up and so on… idiots, there is really nothing going on in NYC if this is the mayors main concern.. wtf. No wonder GTA sells so much, I realy dont even like those games, but with all the contreversy that comes with them, of course they will make out.

The first things I’ll do in GTA4 after waiting in line at Best Buy on October 16th are:
    #1- steal a passenger jet
#2- cover it with remote mines
#3- fly it into a skyscraper

Kidding of course(aircraft and mines may not be availible at first…)

Why do people always interfere with everything, every one would get on a lot better if you left them to make the game, you’re just slowing it down. Every one loves the grand theft auto series it teaches good from bad, and having New York as the setting will make people want to go their and see it.
