The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles Team Q&A #2
The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles is Bethsoft’s expansion for last year’s acclaimed Oblivion, which amassed numerous awards and has reportedly sold over three million copies to PC and Xbox 360 gamers around the world. Released last week, it takes us to visit the imaginative titular plane, which is the domain of the Daedric Prince of Madness, Sheogorath. Reflecting the dualistic personality of its ruling deity, the realm consists of two very different landscapes, Mania and Dementia, the former described as highly creative, the latter as deeply psychotic, with both having huge, twisting dungeons that mirror their respective environments. Despite his godly powers, the demented monarch faces a dire threat that he cannot deal with himself. So, ironically, he is looking for a mortal to act as his champion and to safeguard the land and its inhabitants from impending doom.
As we make our way through the ensuing open-ended adventure, which is likely to take 30 hours or more, we can expect to find ourselves facing more than a dozen new creatures; a few examples include Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibious Grummites and repugnant insects. In addition, we can look forward to finding lots of new items, ingredients, spells and more.
It will also be possible to acquire new weapons and armor fashioned by the gifted craftsmen of Crucible and Bliss. Along with all the other fans of the base RPG and the series, we tracked the title closely through its development period. Now that it has shipped to retail, we remain eager to learn as much as possible. To this end, we were fortunate to get the chance to obtain further insights by questioning various members of the team.
