Sony Playstation 3 a disaster in second week in UK

Sony sure impressed their critics with impressive sales in the first week of launch in the European markets. However, the scenario is changing now.

Incoming reports suggest that second week sales for PS3 in the UK were around 33,000 consoles. This is around an 82% drop from sales in the first week of launch.

The figures were released by media analyst Chart Track who had stated that the company sold around 165,000 machines in its first two days at retail in the UK.

A spokesperson for Chart Track added: “Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent. We publish the first week figures because there’s such a clamor for them that we can’t keep it a secret.”

In fact, the Sony Playstation 3 game sales also dropped by around 60% in the second week.

I have a problem with the chart track numbers, It goes something like this.

Sony shipped 220,000 ps3’s, chart track says 165,000 sold in 2 days then another 33,000 the following week. This would mean the best part of 200,000 sold.

This leaves only 20,000 across the whole of the UK and i’m telling you now everywhere i go shops have LOADS of stock, not only that but they’ve already started slashing the price to shift them.

This site has some pics relating to argos stock numbers, (i’d be sceptical if i had not seen similar stock levels locally)Asda alone has 680 shops in the UK.

Play has dropped the price to £399 + free HDMI cable and Blu-Ray film, WH Smith and several other retailers have similar offers.

Ebay scalpers are taking a hit with some selling £100 below the retail price.

Retailers slashing prices this early in the game does not make any sense with only 20k in the entire UK, something doesn’t add up.

What a silly article. They have almost sold through their entire first shipment to Europe in 2 weeks. 200,000 units shipped 198,000 units sold. This is bad? The Playstation 3’s launch across 2 weeks is unbelievable. An article like this should never be written.

With only 35,000 units in the market they sell 33,000 and it is considered bad.

But at least we have these comments to clear up the biased or just the purely poor reporting.

Congratulations to Sony for the amazing sales in Europe and to their determination to sell the console for what it is worth. This will be the dominant platform within 12 – 15 months globaly and Sony already knows it from their past experiences with the PS1 and PS2. Both Similarly hacked on in the beginning.

Strange how the headline seemed to attract more sony detractors.
Official sales figures show sony selling over 30,000 in week 2. I’m not sure how that could ever be branded a disaster in objective journalism? What sort of figure did the author expect?
As for the price, these discounts don’t reflect anything other than competition between shops with units available, there are margins to be made on the ps3, hence the ability to sell bundles… I wonder when we’ll see the weekly sales figures for the 360 or the ever absent wii?
