Sony could offer commercial utilization of Playstation 3 processing power
Sony’s Playstation 3 might not be selling in large numbers when compared to the Nintendo Wii but it still has managed to impress the analysts with its processing power.
The company recently made available a software upgrade for the gamers which allow them to contribute the processing power of their consoles to the Folding@home project which is managed by Stanford University.
This project is now using the processing power donated by the PS3 owners around the world to study and find cure for several diseases.
Sony is now considering a project in which they can offer commercial companies access to this computing power provided by gamers around the world.
Gamers can be offered product discounts and other incentives to share the processing power of their consoles when they are not being used. The end result could be a super powerful grid which could help businesses do their computing stuff at economical costs.
However, it is not known whether the gamers would be tempted by such an offer which could even be considered controversial. Also, this project could result in fewer gamers contributing to the Stanford project as they could be lured away with discounts and other goodies.
