Playstation 3 helps double the capacity of Folding@home project
Sony recently added a firmware upgrade to their next generation gaming console Playstation 3 which enabled the gamers to contribute the processing power of the console to the Stanford University’s Folding@home distributed computing project.
Now, the people behind the Folding@home project have said that this new addition of computing power has more than doubled their capacities to process the information.
As per latest reports, the capacity of the project now stands at around 700T Flops. Out of this around 400T Flops are being contributed by the owners of the Playstation 3 gaming console.
This also means that the PS3 gaming consoles themselves are now contributing more than double the processing power contributed by Windows PC owners.
The project is aimed at finding cure for diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, cystic fibrosis, BSE and some forms of cancer.
