Nintendo to strike back with Revolution
During a game developers conference underway this week in San Francisco, Nintendo released some information about their next generation gaming console codenamed ‘Revolutions’. The console is supposed to come with support for wireless networking capabilities to connect gamers around the world with each other. The announcement related to the console formed an important part of the keynote address from the Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.
Revolutions would feature a special processor developed by International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) known as ‘Broadway’. ATI Technologies Inc. would be providing the graphical hardware part. The chipset from the ATI to be used in this upcoming console from Nintendo has been codenamed ‘Hollywood’. The company is specially focusing on the networking part of console, which would enable them offer global playing capabilities. This would place Nintendo in direct competition to Microsoft’s own Xbox Live Service.
Nintendo has been largely dominating the handheld consoles market in the last couple of years. Sony PlayStation and Microsoft with their recently launched Xbox dominated the gaming consoles market. However, with Sony entering the handheld gaming device market with PSP, Nintendo felt the need to strike back at the normal console market.
Nintendo also aims to bring wi-fi support to their DS console before the end of the current year. In addition, the company has made clear that their upcoming Revolution would be compatible with existing games developed for the Nintendo’s GameCube. Critics call this move quite unusual considering Nintendo normally rely on proprietary media formats for their newer releases.
Expect the gaming console market to burst when the three giants Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo meet each other and the public in the upcoming E3 Electronic Entertainment Expo in May. All these companies would be coming to the launch with newer products and announcements, which would define how gaming industry develops in the coming year.
