EA Sports boss Peter Moore has said in a statement that he personally does not believe that suing file sharing gamers is going to help the industry.

He pointed towards the music and movie industry saying: “It didn’t work for the music industry.”

He said: “I’m not a huge fan of trying to punish your consumer. Albeit these people have clearly stolen intellectual property, I think there are better ways of resolving this within our power as developers and publishers.”

Moore added: “Yes, we’ve got to find solutions. We absolutely should crack down on piracy. People put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into their content and deserve to get paid for it. It’s absolutely wrong, it is stealing. But at the same time I think there are better solutions than chasing people for money. I’m not sure what they are, other than to build game experiences that make it more difficult for there to be any value in pirating games.”

He stated that account sharing and Gamerscore tampering would result in that gamers account banned from the service for ever.

He said in a blog posting: “If you run into that person in Halo 3 who claims if they could have your LIVE ID name and password to recover your Xbox LIVE account to their Xbox and they’ll rank you up or find you all the hidden skulls in Halo 3, I urge you not to fall to temptation.”

He further wrote: “If you use tampered gamesaves to boost your Achievements and Gamerscore, you may sign in to Xbox LIVE one day and discover that we have removed your Gamerscore. Once we do that, you will never be able to re-earn those achievements on that account. Even worse, you might have your account and/or console banned from Xbox Live.”

Sony just recently announced their decision to drop the price of the 60 GB Playstation 3 console in the US market.

Nintendo has responded back by saying that this price cut is unlikely to affect the sales of their Nintendo Wii console.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata further confirmed in a statement that the hardware side of its Wii game console business has turned profitable.

This is impressive considering both Sony and Microsoft continues to make huge losses on sales of their console units. The companies are betting on sales of the software and content for these consoles to turn the divisions profitable.

Nintendo Wii continues to outsell both Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3 in the markets around the world since the global launch in November last year.

Sony Playstation 2 has been the largest selling videogame console in the history of the industry. Sony continues to sell large number of PS2 units in the market even today.

Nintendo now has a probable contender to the massive popularity and user base of the Playstation 2 gaming console.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has said in a statement that their Wii gaming console has the potential to top the legendary Playstation 2 to become the biggest hit in the industry’s history.

Interestingly, Nintendo just recently moved ahead of Sony in market capitalization. They are now one of the 10 most valuable companies in Japan.

Sony Playstation 2

Wii has been outselling the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 gaming consoles ever since its launch in November last year. The console continues to remain in shortage in the US market.

Iwata said in a statement: “Sony’s PS2 sales of 100 million units is an extraordinary number that our home game console business has not achieved. But if we can make our bid to expand the gaming population a continued success, we could exceed that.”

Market statistics claim that Sony has till now shipped more than 120 million units of the PS2 in the markets around the world. Nintendo had sold 5.8 million units of the Wii by March 2007. They are aiming to sell another 14 million during the current business year.

Konami not impressed with the just announced Playstation 3 price cut

Kazumi Kitaue, the head of Konami’s North American and European operations has said in a statement that the just announced USD 100 price cut on the Playstation 3 gaming console is not going to help Sony much.

Sony has just revealed that the 60GB Playstation 3 gaming console would now cost USD 499 in the US market.

The company also launched a new variant for USD 599 which comes with a 80 GB hard disk. However, this capacity is still smaller compared to the disk supplied with the Xbox 360 Elite edition.

Kitaue said in his statement: “I wonder if Sony can win back user support by the price cut of just $100. I don’t expect a substantial impact … With $500, you can buy a personal computer.”

He further added on Konami games: “Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the Playstation, we would like to keep it a Playstation game. But we might have to take some steps.”

The company is aiming to launch the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PS3 in the current business year to March 2008.

Ken Kutaragi has just stepped down from the top position at the Sony’s gaming division and he has already revealed on his upcoming project.

Kutaragi said that he now wants to explore the possibilities of harnessing the power of networks to bring together content.

He was quoted as saying in the media: “I see a new business in which servers and networks allow many people to jointly perform large calculations and enjoy content together.”

Kutaragi remains connected to Sony as a technology advisor to CEO Howard Stringer. His project could involve products like cell phones and other technologies developed by SCEI and other companies.

He added about similar capabilities existing on the Sony’s Playstation 3 console: “Since I led on networking with the PS3, I think it is my responsibility to push further in that direction.”

Sony’s Playstation 3 supports Stanford University’s Folding@home project and has become one of the leading contributors of processing power for their research work.

Nintendo is in fact interested in networking gaming

The sales of Nintendo Wii are shattering expectations. The console is selling out big time and it is still hard to find an unsold unit in stores in the markets it is available in.

However, gamers are generally disappointed that the console offer little network gaming support. People have even said that the company seems to have missed out on the networking gaming genre which is being dominated by Microsoft’s Xbox Live service.

Nintendo seems to be working on plans to fix this as Miyamoto was quoted as saying in the media: “I prepared myself for the possibility that Wii might face an uphill battle in America, so to see that it has become this big of a hit is something I wasn’t particularly expecting… There are other enhancements to the Wii interface and developments being planned that are going to really make games for hardcore players a lot more fun and interesting… A lot of people have the misunderstanding that Nintendo is not interested in network gaming.”

This should be pretty cool. Worth waiting considering it’s the Nintendo we are talking about!
