Gizmodo has an interesting story on the launch of Sony Playstation 2 gaming console in Brazil.

No, there is no typo here. The company has officially launched the last generation PS2 gaming console in this market just now!

And it has been priced at around USD 465 which makes it more expensive than the Playstation 3 in most international markets.

This also means that the company currently is not offering the PS3 console in Brazil officially.

Of course, both of these gaming consoles and games for them are available in the market unofficially at much lower prices.

It might be the economy but when an ancient videogame console manages to outsell the state of the art machine… you have to feel awkward.

Sony is in such an awkward position as their Playstation 2 console has been outselling their current generation Playstation 3 console.

As per market reports, Sony managed to sell just around 127,000 units of PS3 last month.

This is disappointing compared to sales of 172,000 units of PS2 in the same period.

The company had recently cut the price of the PS2 console so that might have given it a small boost.

The only good thing is that these two consoles together are outselling the Microsoft Xbox 360.

Nintendo? They are still way ahead.

Market sources are claiming that Sony would launch their next generation Sony PSP gaming console at E3 in June.

This would give them enough time to bring the device to the market by September this year. Perfect launch time just before the start of the crucial holiday season.

Sources say that this new edition of Sony’s handheld console would be named Sony PSP Go!

This new edition is likely to feature a larger display with slide out controls.

They are also likely to remove the UMD drive from this edition. Sony’s UMD format has been a major flop.

The device would probably feature inbuilt storage and is likely to be available in two variants 8GB and 16GB.

All these are rumors however as Sony has not revealed anything about the future of PSP.

Sony announced that they would now sell the PS2 console for just USD 99.

The aim is to provide an alternative to Nintendo Wii gaming console which dominates the market.

Sony has been struggling to sell their PlayStation 3 console which is still pretty expensive compared to both Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360.

PlayStation 2 might be eight years old but it still sells in good numbers. Some games are still launched for this platform.

With the global economy in a recession, Sony might see a boost in the sales of PS2 now that it has gone cheaper.

While the Japanese videogame console maker is concentrating on the Playstation 3 in the international markets, they are focusing on the older PS2 here in India.

Sony is going to work with 13 Indian game developers to develop games for the Indian gamers.

They are aiming to develop games which can be sold at dirt cheap prices in the market.

Existing games for this platform are being sold for Rs. 499 per title.

They are partnering with companies like Indiagames, Trine, DQ Entertainment, and Dhruva on this initiative.

Sony added that they are also working on bringing motion-sensing technology on this PS2 platform in the coming months.
